Visualising Complex Science
Neural Networks, Quantum Computing & Black Hole Islands of Entanglement
Commissioned by Prof. Marika Taylor, University of Birmingham
This series of illustrations was developed in close collaboration with Professor Marika Taylor to address a key gap in the public understanding of complex scientific ideas. Topics like neural networks, quantum computing, and black hole entanglement are often misrepresented in popular media or left entirely unvisualised due to their abstract nature.
Our goal was to create scientifically grounded imagery that could resonate with audiences beyond the academic sphere — visuals that not only reflect technical accuracy, but also capture the imagination.
The resulting work was designed for multiple uses, including social media, public lectures, and outreach events, with the flexibility to scale from mobile screens to large-format projection. Each illustration was crafted to balance familiarity with awe, using human-centred motifs, texture, and symbolism to evoke curiosity, optimism, and a sense of discovery.
This project is part of a growing movement within science communication: making frontier science more approachable.
